How Long Does An Orangery Last?

An orangery is an investment in your home just like any other extension, renovation or addition. Just like any form investment, you want to make sure that it’s a safe and smart one. Whilst there’s always a risk when investing money, it’s your job to minimise that risk as much as possible.

Along with "what is an orangery?",  a common question we're asked is: “how long does an orangery last?”

An orangery wouldn’t be a smart investment if you needed to replace windows every 5 years, or refurb the roof or rebuild walls. However, a quality built orangery isn’t like that. Our orangeries are built to last just like (or longer than) the rest of your home. Here’s why:

The Construction

Orangery Build In Progress - Rococo

Our orangeries are built in the same way that your house is. The foundations are dug to the same depth and specifications that your house is built on and in the same way that an extension may be added. The walls are double skin cavity walls and the roof is a sturdy steel structure.

Whilst your orangery may not require planning permission, we still build it to adhere to building regulations in all aspects. Just like you trust the walls of your home, the foundations it’s built on and the roof over your head, you can trust in the build quality of an orangery.

The Products

The products we use within our orangeries, such as windows, doors and roof lanterns are of the highest standard and come with, at a minimum, a 10 year guarantee from the manufacturer.

The products are installed by us as fully accredited members of the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) to guarantee the quality of the installation. The DGCOS is an ongoing program of assessment and consumer protection program that ensures installers continue to meet the highest standards and utmost levels of customer satisfaction.

The Insulation

The orangery is installed and insulated to be an integral part of your home. It’s not like a conservatory that will get very hot in the summer and freezing in the winter; where you have to keep the separating doors closed to protect the rest of your home.

Before construction begins, our designs undergo heat-loss calculations to ensure that the existing building’s thermal properties (and therefore your heating bill) will not be negatively affected by the orangery.

The addition is designed to be thermally insulated like the rest of your home from the elements. This is achieved by wall insulation, double/triple glazing, thermally broken window frames and floor insulation. This ensures no cold spots, no condensation and no damp problems that would otherwise drastically reduce the lifespan of the building.

The Design

We design our orangeries to be an integral part of the home, not a small addition or an afterthought. They are designed to be used daily, in the heart of the home, for all kinds of functions. As such, it never falls aside or neglected like a conservatory might.

How long will an orangery last? A Rococo orangery will last you as long as you expect your home to last. Is an orangery a worthwhile investment? Take a look at our blog to help you understand your orangery investment returns.
